Varicose veins are large bulging veins that are noticeable just beneath the skins’ surface. This occurs in both men and women and for a number of reasons including obesity, bearing children and/or genetics. Long hours of standing over a period of time can also lead to the cause of varicose veins. Interesting enough not everyone with chronic venous insufficiency will develop visible varicose veins.

Although it’s difficult to totally prevent varicose veins from occurring, many patients seem to find relief of minor symptoms with simply wearing good quality compression stockings, with vigilance.

Besides, the obvious unsightly appearance of varicose veins, most patients are suffering with persistent pain, swelling, edema, a feeling of heaviness of the extremity as well as aching and tired legs. These patients typically are first scheduled for a noninvasive venous Doppler ultrasound to evaluate for venous incompetence and identify where the problem is. In addition, a short procedure performed by the physician such as a vein ablation can successfully eliminate or greatly diminish varicose veins in a number of patients.

We hope we’ve answered some of your questions about varicose veins. If you are dealing with this condition or have additional questions, visit the Vein Clinic of Washington website or call 301-270-8346 for appointment.
